Spoilers for The Owl House Seasons 1 and 2!
The Owl House is one of my favorite cartoons, so I was extremely disappointed to hear that it was cancelled. My sister introduced it to me, and I have been enjoying watching it. I just finished Season 2, and apparently there will be only 3 episodes in the next season, and they will be specials.
The Owl House chronicles the adventures of a teenager named Luz who travels through a portal and meets a witch named Eda and a demon named King. Rather than going home when she has the opportunity, Luz decides to stay and become Eda’s apprentice.
Despite the fact that the show has been successful, garnering many fans, Disney apparently made the decision to cancel The Owl House because of its brand.
Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House, said this in response to queries about why the show was being canceled:
“At the end of the day, there are a few business people who oversee what fits into the Disney brand and one day one of those guys decided TOH didn’t fit that “brand.” The story is serialized (BARELY compared to any average anime lmao), our audience skews older, and that just didn’t fit this one guy’s tastes. That’s it! Ain’t that wild? Really grinds my guts, boils my brain, kicks my shins, all the things. It sucks but it is what it is.”
What the heck? It doesn’t fit the brand? Why? What does fit the Disney brand? Because it seems like a lot of stuff does, based on all that Disney has acquired. Star Wars, Marvel, and Studio Ghibli apparently all fit the Disney brand, and they are all vastly different.
Terrace also denied that the show was cancelled due to ratings, budget needs, or the positive LGBTQ+ representation. I strongly doubt that last point. In some countries, The Owl House could not be aired due to its LGBTQ+ content. That is frustrating to the fans who have been thrilled to see Lumity (Luz + Amity) come to fruition when the two teenage girls officially started dating.
And who cares if it is serialized? Like, who in the world honestly cares? Its fans certainly didn’t, and there are many of them.
And again, if the audience skews older, what does that matter? Plenty of content from the aforementioned properties that Disney acquired–namely, Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney–also skew older than the usual Disney content.
Disney should not be making decisions based on what appeals to one person. They should be trying to appeal to their real audience, which consists of all ages.
I really hope this show has a good finale, despite being cancelled. And if it doesn’t, I hope they find another company or make a graphic novel to continue it.
